How to stop drunk driving
Here are a few ideas that I think will work or at least help:
1) Toyota vehicles to refuse drunk drivers
System in cars detects alcohol in blood, dilated pupils
The Associated Press
TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp. is developing a fail-safe system for cars that detects drunk drivers and automatically shuts the vehicle down if sensors pick up signs of excessive alcohol consumption, a news report said Wednesday.
Cars fitted with the detection system will not start if sweat sensors in the driving wheel detect high levels of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream, according to a report carried by the mass-circulation daily, Asahi Shimbun.
Too many glasses of this and the newest Toyota technology would ban you from your own vehicle.
The system could also kick in if the sensors detect abnormal steering, or if a special camera shows that the driver's pupils are not in focus. The car is then slowed to a halt, the report said.
(comment from my son....what if the driver wears gloves?)
2) and one of my own ideas: Take the unused police cars that are sitting in the police compound on weekends and park them on major roads after dark. Turn on their flashing lights and leave them until early morning. Impaired drivers will see the flashing lights and at the least will be super careful, being worried about being pulled over. Also, when drivers noticed that police seem to be everywhere on the weekend they might be too nervous to take a chance. As an added bonus of this concept any young drivers seeing the flashing lights ahead will be slow down and be cautious making the roads much safe. The cost: next to nothing!
3 Slightly kooky....from Freakonomics.com/blog
In an effort to curtail drunk driving, the Bennington (Vt.) Police Department has distributed 200 pint glasses to taverns and restaurants in town, each of them emblazoned with the Police Department’s logo. The idea is that if somebody is draining his third pint and notices the logo, he might be a tad less inclined to drive himself home. I am guessing this would work for a little while, until the novelty wears off (or until people steal all the glasses for souvenirs, which the article says is already happening).

Is there some way to begin with the young and teach people to be happy WITHOUT alcohol?? I've never been a drinker and can't stand the taste and was told that is was "an acquired taste"-- but why would I WANT to acquire a taste for something that is only damaging to my health? (and that of others that get in the way) I'm not knocking it for others, just wondering WHY anyone wants to drink anyway??
I don't see why everyone thinks that underage drinking is such a big deal. Everyone does it and for a school project we have to find out a way to stop it... and this site helped us alot. Thank you
I am happy that Mr. Anonymous that you've stopped by and left a valid comment. I totally agree with you that underage teens are going to experiment with alcohol. Hell, I did it when I was underage. What concerned me most when my son was underage was that he might hurt himself or others while impaired. It's easy to say don't drink (and I did). However, I realized that he might try it anyway. So this left me to think how I could impart some wisdom on my son. The only answer that I ever came up with was to be responsible myself. To by my example teach him. So I always made a point of not drinking to excess in front of him and never ever to get behind the wheel of a vehicle when I had been drinking. Finally to talk openly and honestly about drinking and it's effects. It seemed to work. Like you I'm sure....I think it falls on deaf ears when older adults preach against something they did at that age!
Here is something i don't quite understand. If drinking and driving is the huge problem it is, then why is it that in order for drinking and driving to be a felony, you have to have 5 (yes I said 5)DUIs? Are we not trying to cease this problem? Instead people are saying to themselves, "its okay this is only my 3rd, I still have 2 more before anything SERIOUS happens." Can it not be lowered to say 2 or 3? Can someone please explain to my why there is such a big leeway for these people?
I am a Canadian and here in Canada it is a criminal offence, even for your first DUI. Obviously the laws are different in other countries. Not to say that it has solved the problem.
