It's a paradim shift....think green!

" Sixty-three per cent [of Canadians] were "desperately concerned that if we don't take drastic action right now, the world may not last much longer than another couple of generations." Say what? Drastic action? Now? Or we die? " The political climate in Canada, like the UK, is changing as fast as the real climate. 2007 may be the year this show comes to the United States. (from Treehugger.com)

I'll say it again....this is the year everything turns green, from the environment, to government and finally to business...green is in!

Ummm… so we’re not sure that humans are the cause, but we’re ready to make it our primary political contention in the upcoming election? I’m not saying green is bad or anything, but I happen to have other priorities. With the Canadian birth rate at 1.48 children per woman (the figure for maintaining the status quo being 2.1) I happen to think we’re in greater danger of eliminating ourselves. Why not have a campaign advocating increased sexual productivity? Might even be easier to sell… But this just seems like another symptom of the western will of self depreciation. We’re culturally sensitive, environmentally conscious, and heavily burdened with expensive social programs. The only time we really seem ready to sacrifice is if we somebody else can make us feel guilty for our success (hence our rejection of the Bush Doctrine of democratic advocacy). I guess we like playing the willing victim to whatever fluke cause providing a reason for shame happens to catch our fancy.

Interesting comment superjared! First off let me say that immigration will keep our province from becoming a deserted wasteland and make up the population short fall you speak of. (now that's another topic).
The body of evidence is to diverse for me to say whether climate change is man made or not. However, what if we have created a situation which is escalating? Since we can't be entirely sure, it only makes safe to play it on the safe side and do what we can to protect our little planet. There will be a big cost but perhaps not as big as many have projected.
Perhaps an article on 'reducing pollution without breaking the bank' might be a future writing for me. Thanks for your comment..

Successfully fixing the problem with immigration depends somewhat on the structure of our society. Europe as a whole has a birthrate of 1.38; Japan, 1.32; Russia, 1.14; Australia 1.7… Even India has a quickly growing middle class and subsequently its birthrate is in sharp decline. The exception: people from Islamic cultures. This isn’t a problem if the immigrants themselves hope to ascribe to the core values of the society in which they hope to participate. But Islam is notoriously unconformist, and doesn’t have a very good track record for social tolerance, nor does it often espouse the ideals of liberty. And what identity does the modern immigrant have to conform to anyway? Multiculturalism? It’s not that I would ever propose religious discrimination policies for immigration, but to avoid radical reformation under such conditions, a country needs to have a strictly defined and vigorously defended social identity –something only the United States ever seems to have recognized.

good comments, but of course you are taking me away from my original take on 'think green' and into a discussion on immigration. So be it.
First let me say that the vast majority of immigrants to Alberta have been from other parts of Canada. It is a very small percentage that come from other countries.
So there is little problem with integrating them into our society (except for maybe those Newfies who have trouble with the language).
Also, your comment about 'a campaing advocating increased sexual productivity' I find interesting. However, I should point out that a high majority of the current immigrants to our province are in their 20's and 30's. You don't have to encourage them to procreate....they can't stop themselves!
Here's another benefit of these young people coming from other parts of country. Since they are young, they will be great little taxpayers for many years to come. Of course this has a reverse effect for the poor province that they left behind.
